What is Group Therapy?

Group therapy is a form of therapy that involves one or more therapists working with several people at the same time. Group therapy is generally used as one tool in a variety of treatment options including individual therapy and medication management. The benefit of group therapy is that it allows members to learn from people who are dealing with issues similar to their own, as well as from the trained professional leading the group. Groups can be process based where they focus more on sharing stories and emotions and receiving appropriate support or skills based where a therapist teaches the group skills targeted to the treatment issue and allows practice among the members.
