What is Stress?
Stress is an increasing part of everyday life, especially in recent years. All of us experience some degree of stress due to work demands, family obligations, financial worries, or relationship difficulties. When stress becomes too great, it can begin to take a toll on our mental well being, physical health and even on our relationships or work performance. Learning effective tools for managing stress can help alleviate the symptoms of chronic stress such as insomnia, weight gain, depression, anxiety, and declining physical health.
What is Stress Management Counseling?
There is an “off switch” to this process, called the parasympathetic nervous system. This is what is activated when we sleep, or are in a relaxed state and the “fight or flight” system is suppressed. This is a skill that can be taught with proper instruction and practice, and is a major component of stress management therapy. Relaxation techniques, breathing exercises, and mental exercises that help shut down the fight or flight response can be a huge asset in your ability to manage a difficult and hectic life with far less stress and anxiety. We also focus on patterns of thinking that contribute to chronic stress. There are cognitive (mental) habits that we all have that contribute to stress, and we are largely unaware of them. The statements we say to ourselves has a big impact on how we experience stress too. Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) helps us become more aware of how our thinking patterns contribute to stress, and helps us form habits to change these patterns. Combined with the relaxation strategies described above, CBT can be a powerful toolkit to help you decrease stress, improve your relationships, and feel better while juggling your many responsibilities.
