Biography:
Ms. Karen Shockley is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) who earned her Master’s Degree (MA) in Clinical Counseling from Benedictine University. Karen provides individual counseling to adolescents and adults, with a special interest in adjustment and periods of transition.
Therapeutic Focus & Approach:
Karen’s clinical interests have been shaped by her past experience working in a shelter for teens as well as her current work in a University Counseling Center. Her therapeutic focus is on mood and depression, stress and anxiety, adjustment to life transitions, relationship distress, grief, self-esteem and identity issues, self-harm, and trauma. Karen begins with a person-centered approach – believing in each person’s potential – and utilizes strategies appropriate to each client’s unique situation, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), family dynamics, the Gottman approach to relationship building, relaxation methods, Narrative Therapy, and Interpersonal Therapy.
