Grief & Bereavement Counseling
There are many things in life that can cause us to experience grief and bereavement. The death of a family member or friend, the loss of a relationship, a traumatic event, or alienation from loved ones due to conflict can all be events that push us into the grieving process. In most cases, children have no control over the loss, how the family copes with it, and therefore how they experience it. There is no single “right” way to experience loss or process grief. If you are going through the process of grief or bereavement due to loss, it can be very helpful to talk about what you are experiencing with those that care about you. If a child goes through it, they may not understand what they are experiencing it or feeling which makes it even more difficult to talk about. It can also be beneficial to speak about it with a therapist that has been through the process with others, and can help normalize your experience. In children, they can incorporate play therapy techniques to help give them a way to express and learn to understand their feelings. Sometimes profound grief can cause us to withdraw from those we love, disengage from life and develop into a full blown clinical depression. It can be helpful to meet with a professional that can help recognize the signs of depression, and suggest a therapeutic intervention if the need arises.
