What is Medical Nutrition Therapy?
Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) is individualized dietary instruction that incorporates diet therapy counseling for a nutrition related problem. This level of specialized instruction is above basic nutrition counseling and includes an individualized dietary assessment. A Registered Dietitian Nutritionist licensed in the state of Illinois can provide these services, which may include an initial nutrition and lifestyle assessment, one on one nutritional counseling, and followup visits to check on your progress in managing your diet. The RDN often acts as part of a medical team, in various practice settings, such as hospitals, physician offices, private practices and other health care facilities. Medical nutrition therapy is covered by a variety of insurance plans, such as Medicare and private insurances. Medicare Part B covers medical nutrition therapy for diabetes and kidney disease. If you have private insurance, check with your insurance plan for specific medical nutrition therapy coverage details or dietitian services. Your plan may cover nutrition counseling for a wide variety of chronic conditions and health concerns, such as heart disease, diabetes and obesity. Medical nutrition therapy provided by an RDN includes:
- Review of what you eat and your eating habits
- Thorough review of your nutritional health
- Personalized nutrition treatment plan
