How Can Nutrition Counseling Help With ADHD?
Your child with ADHD may not always eat enough food. For example, skipping meals or forgetting to eat is one of the most common complaints dietitians hear in relation to ADHD. Common medications for ADHD may decrease you or your loved one’s appetite. Other concerns in children on medication can be appropriate growth. Your child’s doctor should regularly measure your child’s height and weight. Talk with your doctor or schedule an appointment with a dietitian to discuss your child’s growth. They can tell if your child is growing and gaining weight at the appropriate rate. If not, a dietitian is an excellent resource to discuss how to make changes to the diet, in relation to current medication, or in order to attain proper growth.
Research studies have reported that some children with ADHD may have low levels of omega3 fatty acids, iron, zinc, and magnesium. Your child should get enough of these nutrients by eating a well balanced diet. Supplements should not be taken unless recommended by your child’s doctor or registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN). Lastly, other questions are whether elimination diets (sugar, gluten, and others) as well as avoidance of certain additives are warranted in children. An appointment should be made with a dietitian in order to discuss common food myths, healthy diet patterns, and individualized diet plans for children with ADHD.
