Giftedness Testing

Giftedness testing is an objective exploration designed to measure how an advanced mind processes information, solves problems, and views the world. This evaluation looks deeply at cognitive areas like abstract reasoning, vocabulary development, and visual-spatial skills to map out an individual’s rapid intellectual pace and unique learning potential. For the treatment and educational team (including parents, teachers, and counselors), these findings provide an essential, practical guide. Armed with a precise look at the individual’s specific cognitive profile, the team can design the right levels of intellectual enrichment, support their unique emotional depth, and create an environment where their exceptional abilities can naturally thrive.

What to Expect

  • One testing appointment to administer an intelligence test (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Fifth Edition: WISC-V, or Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale: WAIS)

  • A review of the results with the testing clinician

  • A written report you can share with your other providers

Testing is available for ages 5 and up. The results review can be done by telehealth. Only the testing itself requires an in-person visit.

Giftedness Testing for Adults

For adults, giftedness testing is a specialized cognitive evaluation designed to identify and map out exceptionally high intellectual potential, advanced abstract reasoning, and complex problem-solving abilities. It looks past traditional academic achievements to measure foundational cognitive traits, including rapid information processing, deep pattern recognition, and advanced verbal or spatial logic, providing a clear picture of how an intensely active mind operates. Giftedness testing is helpful in the following ways:

  • Understanding Intensity and Asynchronous Growth: Gifted individuals often experience the world with a distinct emotional and intellectual intensity, which can easily be misdiagnosed as anxiety, ADHD, or a mood disorder. For adults, testing validates this unique mental pacing, reframing a lifetime of feeling “too sensitive,” “too intense,” or out of sync with peers as natural hallmarks of an advanced cognitive profile rather than a problem.

  • Navigating Career and Academic Boredom: When a gifted mind is trapped in a repetitive, low-complexity environment, it doesn’t just get bored: it can experience profound existential burnout, depression, or underachievement. A formal evaluation helps adults strategically pivot toward careers, research fields, or creative industries that genuinely match their high demand for cognitive complexity.

  • Healing the “Imposter Syndrome”: Many gifted adults struggle with severe imposter syndrome, constantly downplaying their insights or feeling like they are just “faking it” because their brains connect dots faster than those around them. Receiving objective, scientific data about their intellectual capacity provides a powerful sense of closure, allowing them to finally own their capabilities, trust their intuition, and confidently take on high-level personal and professional challenges.

Giftedness Testing for Children and Teens

For children and teenagers, giftedness testing is a comprehensive cognitive evaluation designed to map out exceptionally advanced thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and intellectual potential. Far from a standard classroom exam, this assessment looks deeply at core cognitive domains, such as abstract reasoning, advanced vocabulary acquisition, and complex visual-spatial logic, to understand the rapid pace at which a young mind processes the world. This testing is helpful in the following ways:

  • Validating the Mind’s Natural Rhythm: Gifted children and teens frequently feel isolated or “out of place” among their same-age peers because they think, feel, and absorb information with an intense depth. Testing provides an objective, healthy explanation for this rapid cognitive rhythm, helping youth understand that their unique perspective is a natural trait rather than a reason to feel disconnected or misunderstood.

  • Preventing Boredom and Underachievement: When an exceptionally bright student is kept in a standard curriculum that moves too slowly for them, they can easily lose interest, develop chronic boredom, or mask their abilities to blend in. An evaluation acts as the essential key to unlock specialized advanced tracks, gifted and talented programs, or subject acceleration, keeping their natural curiosity alive and preventing academic burnout.

  • Guiding Asynchronous Development: A major hallmark of giftedness is asynchronous development (meaning a child might have the mathematical reasoning of an adult but the emotional regulation of a child their exact age). The final report gives parents, school counselors, and educators a precise blueprint of this uneven growth, allowing the team to foster their brilliant intellectual talents while providing compassionate, age-appropriate support for their emotional and social needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What score qualifies as “gifted”?

This varies by school district and program, so it’s worth checking specific requirements beforehand. We’re happy to help you figure this out.

Will insurance cover this?

Usually not. Insurance typically only covers testing tied to a psychological diagnosis, and giftedness isn’t classified as one, so this is generally a self-pay service. We’re happy to quote a rate over the phone so you know what to expect before scheduling.
