Autism Spectrum Support · Ages 5 and up

Support should fit the person, not the label.

Each person is different. Our clinicians offer affirming, individualized care for patients on the spectrum and their families. We start from who you are, then build on your strengths.

What it looks like

What autism can look like

Autism shows up differently in everyone, often as some mix of the following.

  • Social situations that feel draining or hard to read
  • Transitions and changes in routine that feel overwhelming
  • Emotional regulation that takes real effort
  • Anxiety layered on top of daily demands
  • Difficulty with self-advocacy in new settings
  • Strengths and interests that run deep and focused

Affirming care built around the whole person

We help children, teens, and adults on the spectrum build on their strengths and navigate the areas that feel harder, from social situations and transitions to emotional regulation, anxiety, and self-advocacy, in a way that respects who they are.

For parents and caregivers, we offer guidance and support so the whole family can better understand and champion their loved one.

We work with patients on the spectrum across the lifespan, from young children through adults.

Our approach

How autism support works at LodeStone

A whole-picture, coordinated path, not a one-size-fits-all plan.

1

Understand the whole picture

We start by understanding who you are, your strengths, and the areas that feel harder, rather than trying to make you fit a mold.

2

Build affirming, individualized support

Developmentally informed, affirming care for social situations, transitions, emotional regulation, anxiety, and self-advocacy, shaped around the person.

3

Support the whole family

For parents and caregivers, we offer guidance so the whole family can better understand and champion their loved one.

Not sure whether it's autism? Our doctoral-level clinicians also offer thorough autism evaluations to answer the question with confidence.

We provide this care in person at our Hinsdale and Woodstock offices, and by telehealth across Illinois. We are in-network with BCBS PPO, Blue Choice, Aetna, Medicare, and United Behavioral Health, and we verify your benefits before your first visit.

A closer look

Understanding autism, and what affirming support really means

Autism is a neurodevelopmental difference in how a person takes in, processes, and responds to the world: social information, sensory input, change, and communication. It's called a spectrum because no two people on the spectrum are alike, and the same person's needs can vary by day and setting. Alongside the challenges, people with autism often carry real strengths: deep focus, honesty, loyalty, and pattern recognition that others miss.

What affirming means in practice

Affirming care does not mean teaching someone to hide who they are. Masking, the exhausting work of performing a neurotypical self, is itself a major source of anxiety and burnout. Instead, we set goals with the person: regulating an overloaded nervous system, communicating needs, navigating school or work, and building relationships on their own terms.

Support across the lifespan

For children, support often centers on routines, transitions, big feelings, and school. For teens, social demands and identity move to the front. Adults on the spectrum come to us for work stress, relationships, and often the experience of a late diagnosis, that mix of relief and grief when a lifetime suddenly makes sense. We meet each of these seasons differently.

Your first steps

What to expect when you start

New places and new people are real work. Here's exactly what the first steps look like, so there are fewer unknowns.

Before your first visit

Start with the get-answers form or a phone call. We'll ask about needs and preferences, match you or your child with a clinician who genuinely fits, and verify your insurance benefits before the first visit.

Your first session

We start from strengths and preferences, not deficits: how you communicate best, what overwhelms, what interests run deep. For children, parents are part of the conversation from day one. Nothing is sprung on anyone.

The ongoing work

Support is individualized: regulation skills, social navigation on your terms, school or work strategies, and guidance for parents and caregivers so the whole family can champion their loved one.

Good to know

Autism support: frequently asked questions

Do you diagnose autism?+

Yes. Our doctoral-level clinicians provide thorough autism evaluations for children, teens, and adults. Many families start there for a clear answer; others come straight to support with a diagnosis already in hand. Both doors work.

Do you work with adults on the spectrum?+

Yes. Adults on the spectrum come to us for work stress, relationships, burnout, and the questions that follow a late diagnosis or self-identification. You do not need a formal diagnosis to start, and we will never treat your identity as the problem.

Is the goal to change who my child is?+

No. Teaching a child to mask trades short-term appearances for long-term anxiety and exhaustion. We help kids on the spectrum regulate, communicate, and thrive as themselves, and we help parents understand and champion the child they actually have.

How are parents involved?+

Closely, especially for younger children. You'll get practical guidance for routines, transitions, meltdowns, and school, and when it helps, family therapy brings everyone into the same conversation.

Will my insurance cover autism support?+

We are in-network with BCBS PPO, Blue Choice, Aetna, Medicare, and United Behavioral Health, and we verify your benefits before your first visit so you know exactly what to expect.

Is telehealth a good fit for autism support?+

Often, yes. Some clients on the spectrum strongly prefer video from a familiar room over a new office, and parent guidance works well remotely. For some younger children, in-person sessions are the better fit. We offer telehealth across Illinois and in-person care in Hinsdale and Woodstock, and we'll recommend honestly.
