Panic Disorder Treatment · Teens and adults

A panic attack can feel like an emergency. Panic disorder is very treatable.

A panic attack can feel like a medical emergency: a racing heart, shortness of breath, dizziness, and a wave of dread. Panic disorder is when the fear of the next attack starts shaping your life. The good news is that it responds well to the right treatment.

What it looks like

How panic disorder can show up

Panic attacks come on fast and peak within minutes. Often the pattern includes some mix of the following.

  • A racing or pounding heart
  • Shortness of breath or a tight chest
  • Dizziness or a sense of unreality
  • A sudden wave of dread or fear
  • Intense physical symptoms that spike within minutes
  • Avoiding places where an attack might happen

Loosen panic's grip, one safe step at a time

Over time, many people begin avoiding places or situations where an attack might happen, which only shrinks their world further. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is highly effective for panic and helps break that cycle.

Our clinicians help patients understand the panic cycle, reduce the physical symptoms, and gradually and safely face the sensations and situations they've been avoiding, so panic loses its grip. Panic often accompanies anxiety, social anxiety, phobias, and trauma, and we treat the full picture.

We treat panic across ages, coordinating with medication management when it's helpful.

Our approach

How panic disorder therapy works at LodeStone

A whole-picture, coordinated path, not a one-size-fits-all plan.

1

Understand the whole picture

We start by mapping how panic shows up for you, what it's connected to, and how it has narrowed your world, so the plan fits your life.

2

Work through the panic cycle

Using CBT, you'll understand the panic cycle, reduce the physical symptoms, and gradually and safely face the sensations and situations you've been avoiding.

3

Coordinate the care

When medication management helps, therapy and prescribing work in step, and because both live under one roof here, that coordination is seamless.

A closer look

Understanding panic, and how the loop breaks

A panic attack is the body's emergency system firing at full power without an emergency: surging heart, tight chest, dizziness, a wave of dread that something catastrophic is happening. It feels dangerous. It isn't, but try telling yourself that mid-attack, and many people's first stop is, reasonably, the emergency room. The attack always passes; it's what happens next that decides whether panic becomes panic disorder.

How panic becomes a disorder

The pivot is fear of the next one. You start scanning your body for early signals, treating every skipped heartbeat as an alarm, and avoiding the places an attack would be embarrassing or hard to escape: highways, stores, meetings. Each avoidance brings relief, and each relief teaches the brain the danger was real. The world shrinks one precaution at a time.

What treatment actually does

CBT for panic reverses the learning. You'll understand the cycle, practice riding out the physical sensations, including deliberately invoking them in safe, controlled ways so they lose their menace, and steadily reclaim the avoided places. It's among the most effective treatments in mental health care, and its gains hold.

Your first steps

What to expect when you start

If leaving the house is part of the problem, know that the path in is short, and telehealth counts.

Before your first visit

Start with the get-answers form or a phone call. We'll match you with a clinician and verify your insurance benefits before your first visit, so cost is never a surprise.

Your first session

Your clinician maps your panic's particular signature: what the attacks feel like, what you've started avoiding, and what safety habits have crept in. Understanding the cycle is itself the first relief for many people.

Practice and progress

You'll learn to ride out sensations rather than fight them, then take back avoided territory step by planned step. Panic treatment tends to move quickly, and you'll see the progress measured in places reclaimed.

Good to know

Panic disorder treatment: frequently asked questions

Are panic attacks dangerous?+

A first episode is worth a medical visit to rule out other causes, and that's usually where people learn the reassuring news: panic attacks, for all their fury, are not dangerous. They are the body's alarm system misfiring, they always pass, and treatment teaches your nervous system to stand down.

How quickly does treatment work?+

Panic responds faster than most conditions we treat. CBT for panic is typically brief and structured, and many people feel meaningfully steadier within a couple of months, with avoided places coming back one by one after that.

What if I have a panic attack during a session?+

Then you'll be in the best possible place for one. Your clinician will guide you through it, and what you learn riding out an attack with skilled support is worth weeks of talking about attacks in the abstract. Nothing about treatment requires white-knuckling alone.

Can medication help with panic?+

It can, and some people combine it with therapy, especially early on. Our prescribers and therapists work under one roof, so the plan stays coordinated, including any taper later, once the skills are carrying the load.

Will my insurance cover panic disorder treatment?+

We are in-network with BCBS PPO, Blue Choice, Aetna, Medicare, and United Behavioral Health, and we verify your benefits before your first visit so you know exactly what to expect.

Does telehealth work when driving and leaving home are the problem?+

Yes, and that's exactly when it shines. Starting by video removes the barrier panic built, and as treatment progresses, the drive to an in-person session can become one of the exposures. We offer telehealth across Illinois and in-person care in Hinsdale and Woodstock.
