What is Bipolar Disorder?

Bipolar Disorder, is a disorder that includes major shifts in mood and behavior. There are 2 categories of the disorder: Bipolar I and Bipolar II. The first includes the symptoms of Mania, and may or may not include episodes of Depression. The second type includes recurrent bouts of Depression with episodes of Hypomania, which is a period of unusually elevated mood or irritability that lasts at least 4 days. The specific patterns of symptoms in Bipolar Disorder can be confusing, but all of them include shifts in mood and behavior that last at least 4-7 days (not a matter of hours), and include significant interference with your normal life, including in relationships and occupations.

How is Bipolar Disorder Treated?

Bipolar Disorder is usually treated with a combination of medications and therapy. During severe episodes of Depression or Mania, more intensive treatment may be required such as hospitalization or intensive therapy programs. At the LodeStone Center, we tend to use Cognitive Behavior Therapy, or CBT when working with this disorder, and work to coordinate therapy with the medication decisions made by the patient’s medical doctor or psychiatrist.

TeleHealth At Home Counseling and Psychotherapy

Telehealth, or “teletherapy” is a highly effective method of accessing care that is particularly useful for people in remote work positions, those with transportation issues or for those that live a significant distance from a provider they would like to see. Managing symptoms of Bipolar Disorder can be difficult and therapy can provide assistance in that. Telehealth reduces the planning and time commitment allowing easier access to help that can benefit the recovery process. People with Bipolar Disorder can benefit from therapy along with other treatment modalities and the convenience of receiving therapy from anywhere can make it easier to take the jump. Telehealth can be equally or at times even more effective than in person, as the environment you receive therapy in is the first step in establishing a therapeutic setting and relationship. Having access to comfort spaces and items can allow the therapist and client to really dive into the process, knowing that they are safe and have the tools they need readily available. We encourage you to complete your telehealth sessions in a space where you are safe, feel comfortable, and have an adequate amount of privacy. Telehealth comprises approximately 60% of the care delivered by The LodeStone Center and we utilize one of the easiest to access and highest quality platforms for our telehealth calls (Zoom for Healthcare). It’s easy to use, secure and available on any computer, tablet or phone. Psychotherapy, counseling and medication management are all accessible through our telehealth option, and every provider at The LodeStone Center is available through telehealth. Our registration process is entirely online, and many services are available within a few days.
