What is OCD?
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is an anxiety disorder that causes people to have excessive fears or repeating, persistent thoughts (obsessions) and can cause them to perform repetitive behaviors or rituals to help deal with those thoughts (compulsions). These obsessions are not simply real-life worries, but are excessive and deeply anxiety provoking. When a person needs to perform behaviors to deal with these worries, the compulsions can be quite debilitating and time consuming. When the fear and/or the compulsion begin to interfere with the person’s life, they may meet criteria for OCD.
What Does OCD Treatment Focus On?
Therapy for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder focuses on a range of goals that tend to help reduce symptoms of the disorder. Cognitive Behavior Therapy is a type of therapy that teaches techniques to reduce anxiety and help restructure anxiety-based thoughts to help people gain control over their symptoms. As people learn to cope effectively with the obsessive thoughts, and develop alternate behaviors to help manage anxiety, they begin to develop ways to break the cycle of thoughts and behaviors that maintains the disorder. Therapy also focuses on other areas of life that are impacted by OCD. Sometime relationships become strained due to the symptoms, people withdraw from life activities and goals, or are unable to engage in the things they want to do in life. Therapy for OCD focuses on regaining access to all the areas of your life that may have been strained by OCD.
